15.11.24 Handa's Surprise

15.11.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Browne. Handa, who's part of the Luo tribe in south-west Kenya decides to take seven pieces of delicious fruit to her friend, Akeyo, who lives in the neighbouring village. But as Handa wonders, I wonder what fruit Akeyo will like best?, a series of sneaky animals steal something from Handa's basket, which she's carrying on her head... When Handa reaches Akeyo, will she have anything left to offer her friend?

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was the traditional tale ‘’Golidlocks and the 3 Bears’. We have described the main characters, Golidlocks and the 3 Bears and also have thought about the setting of the story. Our role play area has changed into the 3 bears cottage and we have added character masks so we can take on the roles of the different characters and retell the story.

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – find the squares amongst the different shapes and colour them in

Fine motor – cut out the different fruit pictures and stick them onto the basket

Literacy – look at the pictures and write the CVC words to match

Funky fingers – use the tweezers to count out the fruits to match the numbers 1-5

Creative – cut the different fruits and make a fruit kebab

Phonics – read the words and find the picture to match

ICT – complete an autumn picture jigsaw

In maths this week Reception have been looking at different ways to make the numbers 4 and 5. We have used double sided coloured counters to show the different ways to make these numbers and represented these using the 5s frames. We have also been using numicon pieces to show the different ways to make 4 and 5 and have been inquisitive at looking at the shapes the different representations make.

Nursery have been looking at the numerals 1 and 2 and looking at different ways 2 can be represented. We have also been subitising; being able to recognise 2 quickly without counting.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘1, 2 buckle my shoe’ which can be found at https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-one-two-buckle-my-shoe/zkvtqp3

In phonics this week Reception have continued to recap Set 1 sounds and have learnt 6 new special friends. We have been making up different CVC words using all the sounds we have learnt so far and using our fingers to make sure we have included all the sounds needed when writing words. We have been playing a ‘go fishing’ game and looked at a range of CVC words on the green flashcards and have started to read these using the sound buttons.

Nursery have been doing lots of listening activities and have been on a sound walk around school trying to identify different sounds they have heard.

On Monday during our RE lesson we have started to think about the meaning of Christmas. We watched a video clip of the Christmas story and talked about the different people who were significant on that special night. We worked together as a group to look at different labels and labelled the nativity scene.

On Monday as it was ‘Remembrance Day’ we gathered as a whole school to take part in a 2 minutes silence at 11am. We made our own split pin poppies which we wore on our coats with pride.

As we have also been reading Handa’s Surprise we have tasted lots of different fruits found in the story; pineapple, bananas, orange, guava, mango, avacado and passion fruit. We talked about how they tasted and of they were sweet or sour and whether we had eaten these before. We talked about the fruits we eat on a regular basis and how these are a bit different to what we might usually chose as the story takes part in Africa and how our cultures and climates are different. .

This week seems to have all been about eating as we also made our own porridge to have during our outdoor learning session to keep us warm and to pretend we were Golidlocks from the story of Golidlocks and the 3 Bears. We had to be careful that it wasn’t too hot before we ate it! It was a huge hit and many of us had our bowl filled up!

On Friday it was Children in Need and we came into school wearing Pudsey clothes or something spotty. We went into the hall with the rest of the school and covered Pudsey Bear faces with lots of change we brought in from home to support the charity. We listened to songs which have been released as part of the fundraiser in previous years and had a parade around to show everyone our outfits. Once we were back in the classroom we enjoyed colouring different Pudsey pictures. To end the day we completed a ‘danceathon’ and did lots of different action songs – we all have the BEST time!

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is Shark in the Park by Nick Sharratt and our Drawing Club focus is the original animation of Bagpuss.
