08.11.24 We're Going on a Bear Hunt

08.11.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen. A family's is excited as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of a bear. What a surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the dark forest!

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was ‘Not Now Bernard’ by David McKee. Bernard's got a problem. He's found a monster in the back garden but his mum and dad are just too busy to notice. So Bernard tries to befriend the monster… and that doesn't go quite to plan.

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – count the bonfire pictures and match them to the numerals

Fine motor – chose a firework picture and make it with the different 2D shapes

Literacy – draw a picture and write something you might see on bonfire night

Funky fingers – make the firework patterns with the different coloured pipe cleaners

Creative – use the resources to make a bonfire picture

Phonics – cut and stick the sounds to make CVC words to match the picture

ICT – complete an autumn picture jigsaw

In maths this week Reception have started their next block of learning called ‘Light and Dark’ and have been focusing on numeral 4 and 5. We have been practising to write, tally, and represent the numerals as well as finding different ways of making 4 and 5. We have also started to use ‘5’s’ frames and counters to represent 4 and 5. This is a concrete resource we will be using more as we progress through the White Rose Maths scheme.

Nursery have been looking at the numeral 1 and looking at different ways 1 can be represented. We have also been subitising; being able to recognise 1 quickly without counting.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘1 finger 1 thumb’ which can be found at https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-one-finger-one-thumb-keep-moving/zbtj47h

In phonics this week Reception have been grouped according to the ability based on the assessments which were carried out by Miss Sheridan and Mrs Whaley at the end of last half term. We have continued to work together to recap single Set 1 sounds and have also been looking at ‘special friends’ sh and th and using these sounds when making up words using the magnetic letters. We have looked at a range of CVC words on the green flashcards and have started to read these using the sound buttons. Some children have began to write a range of CVC words based on the sounds they are secure on.

Nursery have been doing lots of rhyming activities. This week their learning has been based around the traditional tale ‘Goldilocks and the 3 Bears’ which has introduced them to the story and main characters.

As many children attended Bonfire celebrations we have looked at the reasons why some people chose to mark this occasion and why fireworks are used. We learnt about Guy Fawkes and that he intended to blow up the houses of parliament using gunpowder. We talked about how this was a very long time ago and looked at pictures of what Guy Fawkes might have looked like and how the clothing he may have worn differs from our clothing choices today. We also learnt to say the poem ‘Remember, remember the 5th of November’ together and looked at how this date could be shown on our class calendar.  We took our learning outside and made a huge bonfire picture ‘ART ATTACK’ style from twigs, branches and different coloured leaves from the tree outside Mr Hetherington’s office window.

On Friday during our outdoor learning session we went on our own ‘bear’ hunt. We all took our shoes off and walked across different surfaces and textures and described how they felt. We walked through wet leaves, bark chippings, grass, concrete, mud and some grim looking puddles.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne and our Drawing Club focus is the traditional tale ‘Goldilocks and the 3 Bears’.
