This week our first ‘Super Six’ story was ‘Giraffes Cant Dance’ by Giles Andreae. Gerald the tall giraffe would love to join in with the other animals at the Jungle Dance, but everyone knows that giraffes can't dance . . . or can they?
Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was The Colour Monster’ by Anna Llenas which has really made the children think about different feelings and emotions. We have thought about different times we have felt ‘out of sorts’ and the different emotions expressed in the book and we talked about how these have made us feel.
This week our rainbow challenges have been:
Maths – cut and stick the matching socks
Fine motor – sort the pom poms into the different colours using the pom poms
Literacy – use the magnetic letters to match the sounds to the picture
Funky fingers – make a colour monster using the different body part
Creative – create a giraffe face using the different shapes
Phonics – cut and stick and sort the m pictures from the set
ICT – colour sorting game https://pbskids.org/sid/games/sorting-box
In maths this week Reception we have been sorting objects by size and using the language of more than and less than. Nursery have continued to talk about different colours and finding different objects around the classroom. We have continued to explore Ten Town and this week we met Tommy Two.
This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘One Potato, Two Potato, Three Potato, Four’ which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efMHLkyb7ho
In phonics this week Reception have been learning the next 4 sounds c k u b from the Read Write Inc scheme. We have been using the sounds from previous weeks to make up different words using the magnetic letters. We have also been revisiting sounds and practising the letter formations using the different rhymes.
In ‘Drawing Club’ this week we have been using our knowledge of the sounds taught so far to represent words we have been wanting to write. The children have been encouraged to think of the initial sounds of words and use the letter mats to copy these sounds. This really has given the children confidence to believe that they can express their ideas and write words. Any additional ideas the children have are scribed by an adult so we know what discussion has happened during our small group sessions.
In RE this week we have been thinking about God and how he is special to Christians. We have talked about everyone being different and that Christians believe that God knows everyone individually.
During our outdoor learning session this week we have been getting creative once again but this time we have made a ‘Camo Spider Crab Scarecrow’ which we are going to enter into the Lillidorei Halloween competition which will run throughout October at Alnwick Garden’s. We used old camouflage clothing and stuffed it with hay and decorated it with spiders. Make sure you check it out and vote for us to win a free visit to the playground.
Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is Peace at Last by Jill Murphy and our ‘Drawing Club’ book is Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. The witch and her cat fly happily over forests, rivers and mountains on their broomstick until a stormy wind blows away the witch's hat, bow and wand. They are retrieved by a dog, a bird and a frog, and each animal asks for a ride on the broom. They climb on, one after the next, until the broom is so heavy that it snaps in two! What will happen next as they tumble into a bog and meet a greedy dragon? We think this story is going to be a one of our favourites so far!
