18.10.24 Winnie's Amazing Pumpkin

18.10.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. Sarah, Percy and Bill the baby owls wake one night to find their mother gone. As the darkness gathers and they perch patiently on their branch waiting for her return, oh how they worry!

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was ‘Winne the Witch and the Amazing Pumpkin’ by Korky Paul. Winnie and Wilbur love their vegetables. They are regulars at the weekly farmers' market to stock up on their greens, but bringing them back home on a broomstick proves to be rather hazardous. What will happen?

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – order the spooky numbers

Fine motor – cut and stick the different shapes to make an owl

Literacy – sequence the pictures to retell the story of Owl Babies

Funky fingers – use the dabbers to complete the autumn pictures

Creative – explore the different coloured paints to make a bubbling cauldron picture

Phonics – write the initial sounds to match the picture

ICT – shape patterns https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns

In maths this week Reception have continued with the block of learning called ‘It’s Me 1,2,3’. We have been thinking about what ‘sorting’ means and how decide how to group different pictures and objects by carefully looking for similarities. We have also enjoyed playing dominos and looking for the matching numbers.

Nursery have also been thinking about sorting and we have looked at the different coloured objects and decided how we should sort them whether we should sort them just by colour or whether we can sort them any other way such as shape.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘5 Currant Buns’ which can be found at https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-five-currant-buns/zm4nmfr

In phonics this week Reception have finished learning the first set of single sounds from Set 1 in the Read Write Inc phonics scheme ahead of their first assessment which Mrs Whaley completed this week. We have been doing lots of ‘Fred Talk’ throughout the day to get the children confident to orally blend such a “can you put this in the b-i-n” and the children have been giving instructions to their friends like this too. Nursery have had fun with the parachute this week and hiding underneath it when trying to identify different sounds.

On Tuesday Revd. Nathanael led our collective worship and taught us about the history of the Bible. Reception children received their own Bible which will stay in the classroom to be used during RE sessions and the Nursery children each got a hand held cross to represent the start of their Christian journey in school.

This week we have been down to the sensory garden and had great fun making our own wands to perform spells like Winnie the witch. We used different coloured pieces of wool and attached them to sticks. We used these when we retold the story of Winnie and her Amazing Pumpkin.

We also have had great fun mixing potions in the tough tray outside using coloured water and different sized containers and have added lots of natural objects to make our creations super exciting.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is Meg and Mog by Helen Nicoll and our Drawing Club focus is ‘Funnybones’ by Janet and Allan Alberg.
