This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘After the Storm’ by Nick Butterworth. A storm is raging outside and Percy the park keeper is having a sleepless night. When he gets up the following morning, Percy finds that the old oak tree has been blown down. It is a disaster for his animal friends who live there, but Percy is soon devising a plan to help his little friends find new homes.
Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. A well-known rhyming story with twists and turns along the way as the animals journey together on the witches broom.
This week our rainbow challenges have been:
Maths – continue the pattern on the scarves
Fine motor – build a broomstick using the LEGO
Literacy – copy write the green words onto the witches hats and sound them out
Funky fingers – use the tweeers to pick the pom poms out the witches cauldron
Creative – cut and stick the different shapes to make a witches face
Phonics – sort the pictures to find the initial sound s
ICT – ordering numbers https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/mushroomShuffle/index.html
In maths this week Reception we started a new block of learning called ‘It’s Me 1,2,3’ as part of the White Rose scheme of learning. We have identified the numerals 1,2 and 3 in the environment, represented the amounts on tens frames and sorted objects into the different amounts. Nursery have been matching different shapes and also looking at matching objects.
This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘5 Little Ducks’ which can be found at https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-five-little-ducks-went-swimming-one-day/z43xwty
In phonics this week Reception have been learning the next 5 sounds from the Read Write Inc scheme. We have been making up words using the magnetic letters and also reading words from the green flashcards. The children have also been having a go at writing simple CVC words to using their fingers to help them to identify each sound.
Nursery have been thinking about different types of pets that we might have in our own households. They have been talking about the different sounds they make and been identifying these when playing different games.
In ‘Drawing Club’ this week we have continued to use our knowledge of the sounds taught so far to represent words we have been wanting to write. The children have been encouraged to think of the initial sounds of words and use the letter mats to copy these sounds. We have introduced different focus vocabulary over the past few weeks as part of these sessions which link to the different stories. The children have learnt actions to help them remember them and we have been talking about when we can use them in our everyday speech. Some of the words we have been talking about are; recognised, confused, passenger and swoop.
On Monday afternoon Reception went to Church to meet Rev. Alison as part of their RE learning. We took our class doll who the children named Olive Poppy Longhoughton with us and we learnt all about Baptism. Rev. Alison baptised the baby in the font and we received a Baptism candle, card, shell and wooden leave which has the shape of a cross inside – all the things a newly Baptised baby receives when they have their own Christening in Church. Everyone has their own roles to play and we enjoyed a chocolate treat afterwards as part of a celebration.
We have been down to the sensory garden this week as part of our outdoor learning. The children worked in small groups to collect different natural objects that had been blown down from the ‘storm’. Some of the children chose to use their findings to make their own repeated patterns linked to their maths learning from last week. We also retold to story of Room on the Broom using props and joining in with the repeated phrases from the book. We used some of the fallen branches and sticks to make our own broomsticks too!
Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and our Drawing Club focus is Winnie and the Amazing Pumpkin by Valarie Thomas and Korky Paul.
