25.10.24 Funnybones

27.10.23

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘Meg and Mog’ by Helen Nicholl. eg and Mog are off to a Halloween party with all of their friends. But, BANG! One of Meg's spells hasn't worked as planned! Can Meg and Mog fix it?

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was ‘Funnybones’ by Allan Ahlberg "This is how the story begins... On a dark dark hill there was a dark dark town. In the dark dark town there was a dark dark street." I wonder what is going to happen?

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – identify how are in the group 1,2, or 3?

Fine motor – make a small moving skeleton

Literacy – write something in the skeleton speech bubble

Funky fingers – transfer the googly eyes using tweezers from the potion

Creative – make a skeleton from the different white resources

Phonics – cut and stick the initial sounds to match the pictures

ICT – find the CVC word which matches the picture

In maths this week Reception have been looking at circles and triangles. We have talked about their properties and been describing them and we now know that a circle has 1 curved edge and a triangle has 3 straight sides. Throughout this week we have been sorting circular and triangular objects and looking at everyday objects around school which are circles and triangles. We have also cut out circles and triangles to make different shape pictures.

Nursery have continued to think about how they can sort objects. We have talked about similarities and differences when sorting and then have sorted objects based on their own criteria.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘5 Fat Sausages’ which can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=bjCchQ8DtHo

In phonics this week Reception have been going through all the Set 1 sounds they have learnt so far. We have been making up lots of CVC words using the magnetic letters and having a go at writing lists of CVC words using the letter formation rhymes to support their writing. Some of the children are now ready to take home a phonics based reading book which matches the sounds they have been taught so far. Everyone also has chosen a reading for pleasure book to take home to share with their parents. These will continue to be changed weekly and the children will have the opportunity to share their books with our volunteers who love seeing how much they are progressing each week. These will be given out when we come back to school after half term.

We have been getting very creative in St George Class this week and have enjoyed experimenting lots of different resources. We have used different sized sticks to complete the characters from Funnybones.

On Friday we were very lucky to visit ‘SPOOKYDOREI’ at the Alnwick Garden’s. We enjoyed exploring the huge playground and climbing structure and sliding down the huge long slides! We all had a great time playing together as a end of half term treat.

Our role play area has been turned into a house for the beginning of next half term before we add enhancements linking to Goldilocks and the 3 Bears as we start our new format for Drawing Club. We will start a 3 week cycle which will be a familiar story, traditional tale and then an amination to give the children exposure to a range of key texts and narratives.

After half term our ‘Super Six’ book is We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and our Drawing Club focus is ‘Not Now Bernard by David McKee.

We hope you all have a fantastic half term and enjoy your Halloween celebrations. Next half term is going to be a busy one starting with Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and Divali as we start our new topic of ‘Let’s Celebrate’ and ‘Where I Live’.

As always thank you all for your support and well done to all of St George Class for a brilliant first half term.
