Curriculum Intent Statement
Everything we do at Longhoughton CE Primary School is guided by our school aims and the Christian vision (see Vision and Values) to support our children in becoming aspirational, successful citizens and lifelong learners.
At Longhoughton CE Primary School we carefully design, plan and implement a curriculum that provides breadth, balance and is relevant. Our curriculum is based upon the formal provision of the National Curriculum, extra-curricular activities and those aspects of school life, which contribute to the development of the whole child and the whole school ethos (see Vision and Values). This wider curriculum takes account of the widely differing skills and abilities of the children in our care, at all their various stages of development.
We have designed and planned our curriculum to offer a range of experiences which contribute to every child receiving a full and rich learning experience that meets the school’s vision of Think, Learn, Love and Play.
The range of experiences we offer support and champion our culture and ensure that our children benefit from a range of academic, spiritual, moral, social and cultural activities. These activities enrich the children’s lives and those of the whole school community and make them proud of the British vales and diverse society to which we belong. We are proud that our curriculum gives our children the skills, confidence and self-belief to lead happy and fulfilled lives by encouraging them to aim high and work towards their goals and dreams in life.
Within the school community there is a shared belief that children learn best when they are happy, enthusiastic and having fun. We aim to broaden and deepen the children’s knowledge and understanding through strong curriculum links at every available opportunity – educational visits, visitors, use of the school grounds and the local area, sharing learning through performance (class worships), sporting activities (both competitive and non-competitive), residential visit for Y6 children.
We believe that through the curriculum we can have an impact on what the children learn and how they feel about themselves so that they feel confident and ready to tackle any challenges they may face. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that every child receives an appropriate mix of academic and personal development; children’s physical and mental well-being are as valued and as important as academic development.
At any particular time in the day, children may be working as a whole class, in groups or individually according to need. In this way children will be challenged to work according to their age, stage and ability.
Throughout the school children follow programmes of study directly related to the National Curriculum.

All children are regularly assessed to ensure they are making progress and that tasks are appropriate to their learning.
We believe that effective assessment provides information to improve teaching and learning. We give our children regular feedback on their learning so that they understand what it is that they need to do better. This allows us to base our lesson plans on a detailed knowledge of each child. We give parents regular reports on their child’s progress so that teachers, children and parents are all working together to raise standards for all our children.
The aims and objectives of assessment in our school are:
- to enable our children to demonstrate what they know, understand and can do in their work
- to help our children understand what they need to do next to improve their work
- to allow teachers to plan work that accurately reflects the needs of each child
- to provide regular information for parents that enables them to support their child’s learning
- to provide the Headteacher and Governors with the necessary information that allows them to make judgements about the effectiveness of the school
