Religious Education (RE) Intent Statement & Progression Map
At Longhoughton CE Primary School we view Religious Education as an opportunity to celebrate the similarities and differences within our school and community. We believe that RE plays a significant role in the development of pupils’ spiritual, social and cultural growth.
The intention of the Religious Education curriculum is to prepare children to be educated citizens and develop an interest in learning about and from a variety of religions, so that they can understand, appreciate and value the world around them.
Our school curriculum is planned to engage, inspire, challenge and encourage pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions, explore different religious beliefs, values and traditions and develop a understanding of the numerous religious traditions, beliefs and practices that are followed in our multi-cultural society.
The school promotes strong Christian values which enables the children to ask questions about the world and reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We want them to know how religious education promotes discernment and enables pupils to combat prejudice, preparing them for adult life, employment and life-long learning. At Longhoughton CE Primary School we want children to enjoy their learning and to show respect towards other people’s beliefs and ideas.
We provide opportunities for all of our children to visit a range of places of worship throughout their time at Longhoughton CE Primary school in an attempt to remove geographical barriers linked to our rural and coastal location and allow our children to tap into our County’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
To support this, we use the agreed Northumberland Religious Education syllabus as the basis for our curriculum alongside Understanding Christianity.
