03.05.24 Bill and Ben

03.05.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘TITCH’ by Pat Hutchins. Titch is the smallest and the youngest in his family. His brother Pete and his sister Mary have bigger bikes than Titch, kites that fly high-up in the sky and instruments that make much BIGGER noises. But when Titch plants a tiny seed they all find out that starting off small is just the first stage of GROWING!!!

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus was the original animation of ‘Bill and Ben’. Bill and Ben are mischievous flower-pot men who live in the garden. During their adventures they are helped and hindered by their many friends, including their very wise advisor ‘Weed’.

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – complete the subtraction calculations

Fine motor – busy garden colouring

Literacy – look at the picture from TITCH and write a matching caption
Funky fingers – use the tweezers to move sunflower seeds to match the number on the flowers
Creative – colour in and make a pinwheel
Phonics – cut and stick the words to match the picture
ICT – phase 3 CVCC and CCVC words game

In maths this week Reception have started their new block of learning ‘find my pattern’. We have been looking at doubling using numicon shapes and also dominos. During ‘Ten Town’ the children have used tens frames and counters to complete a combination of addition and subtraction calculations making sure they look at the – or + carefully to know what they need to do to find the answer. This is something we will continue to work on up until half term.

Nursery have been using the vocabulary ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ this week when looking at different groups or objects and comparing them. They have also started to give reasons for their answers and use ‘because’ when verbally giving an explanation for their reasoning.

In Read Write Inc phonics this week Reception have been consolidating their learning from the past 6 weeks and have finished the week working with Miss Sheridan who has assessed them to regroup the children which will start next week. Children are expected to know all their Set 1 sounds and be able to read a selection of CVC words which are both real and alien words. They are also expected to know the first few sounds within Set 2 sounds of Read Write Inc (ay ee igh ow and oo) and apply these when decoding unfamiliar words but also use the when writing. This is something we will continue to work on as we more towards the end of the academic year in preparation for being Year 1 ready.

Nursery have continued with Read Write Inc this week in preparation for September. Each day the children have looked at a new sound (ckubf) and explored different objects which start with the same initial sound. Each sound has had a different story to listen to and everyone has had a go at mark making to write the sounds using the different rhymes. The children have also been listening to Mrs Archer ‘Fred Talk’ some words using the sounds they learnt last week to try and listen to the sounds to be able to recognise and say the word. This takes lots of practice and is something the children will be doing over the next few weeks as they learn more sounds. These can be sound at; https://www.tetney.lincs.sch.uk/_documents/%5B536133%5DRWInc_Letters_and_Rhymes.pdf The children in Nursery will only be focusing on single Set 1 sounds and this is something that will be revisited in September once the children are grouped depending on their ability as Read Write Inc aims to support children to learnt to read as quickly as possible once they are ready.

We have been carefully looking at the sunflower seeds we planted this week and have noticed some changes. Some of the seeds have germinated and have started to grow a small shoot in the soil. We have talked about the importance of making sure they have plenty water and are in a warm place to give them the best chance of growing. The other classes in school have also planted sunflower seeds so we are going to have a competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘The Runaway Pea’ by Kjartan Poskitt and our ‘Drawing Club’ story is the Olivers Vegetables by Vivian French.
