15.03.24 Rumble in the Jungle

15.03.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ by Giles Andreae. Join this rhyming safari and meet everyone from the elphing elephant to the gangly giraffe, and maybe even the terrible tiger!

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus was the original animation ‘Mr Benn the Zoo Keeper’. We met Mr Benn on the street he lives in and went with him to the costume shop where he turned into a zoo keeper and helped people understand how important it is that animals need to be looked after properly.

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths –  addition using counters and 10’s frames

Fine motor – make a snake using the different coloured pasta shells

Literacy – “I like ……… because………”
Funky fingers – peg the numerals to the matching amounts
Creative – make a monkey using the different cut out parts
Phonics – fill in the missing sounds to complete the words
ICT – read as many words as you can in 90 seconds https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/helpAHedgehog/index.html

In maths this week Reception have been continuing to look at numbers to 20. We have been using number tiles to order to 20 and have been spotting if any have been missing and working out what they are by looking at the tens and ones and talking about the numerical patterns.

Nursery have been talking about length and height and have been using the vocabulary tall/short and long/short this week when comparing different resources.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘5 Little Monkeys swinging through the trees’ which can be found at the following link; Five little monkeys | Early Years - Nursery Rhymes (youtube.com)

In Read Write Inc phonics this week Reception have continued to work in our 2 separate groups with Mrs Whaley and Miss Campbell. Mrs Whaley’s group have been focusing on special friends and being able to spot these quickly in words when sounding them out. In Miss Campbell’s group they have been recapping Set 2 sounds and have been reading a selection of real and alien words.

On Monday afternoon we had a special visitor join us for our RE lesson. Rev. Alison came to talk to use about Easter and the important time leading up to the celebration and why this is important for Christians. We talked about the importance of palm crosses and sang ‘Hosanna’ and played the musical instruments because this is a happy and joyous time in the Christian calendar. We also enjoyed tasting hot cross buns as these are eaten at Easter time and also have a symbol of the cross on them.

On Tuesday to celebrate ‘Science Week’ we had Professor Brainstorm in school and we enjoyed watching him do different science experiments. We enjoyed it when Mrs Archer sat on a chair and had a bottle turned upside down over her head! The bottle was filled with water and the water didn’t come out because of a ping pong ball.

On Friday we supported ‘Comic Relief’ and raise lots of money for the charity by completing as many laps around the field as possible either by running or walking in a 30 minute time slot. In the afternoon the whole school went into the hall and we did a danceathon for 20 minutes following instruction on a screen with Darcy Bussell. It was great fun and we learnt different moves to put together to make a dance.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘ZOO’ by Anthony Browne our ‘Drawing Club’ story is ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ by Judith Kerr.
